Ingredients

For the patties
  • 1 pound ground beef A great source of protein; lean ground beef can be used for a healthier option.
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs Help bind the patties; gluten-free breadcrumbs work for a gluten-free version.
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped Adds flavor; shallots can be used for a milder taste.
  • 1 large egg Binds the mixture; a flax egg can substitute for a vegan option.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Enhances the savory flavor.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Essential for seasoning.
For the gravy
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced For a rich and earthy flavor; consider using a mix of mushrooms for complexity.
  • 1 cup beef broth Adds depth; vegetable broth can be a lighter alternative.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Gives a nice umami kick; soy sauce can work in a pinch.
  • 1 cup heavy cream For a luxurious gravy; half and half can be used for a lighter option.
  • 2 tablespoons flour To thicken the gravy; cornstarch is a good gluten-free alternative.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For cooking; feel free to use avocado oil for a different flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, onions, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined. Form into patties.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
Cooking
  1. In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and sauté until they are golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms, stir, and cook for 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
  3. Gradually add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring continuously. Cook until the mixture thickens, approximately 2-3 minutes.
  4. Stir in heavy cream and mix well. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer for 5-7 minutes until patties are heated through and thoroughly coated in gravy.
  5. Plate the patties and smother with mushroom gravy. Enjoy this hearty, satisfying meal!

Notes

For added flavor, consider marinating the ground beef with seasonings a few hours ahead of time. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to three days or frozen for up to three months.
