Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries Fresh is best, but frozen blueberries work too. Just thaw them first.
  • 1 cup water Essential for boiling; can substitute some with orange juice for a different flavor.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Brown sugar can be used for a richer taste.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Cuts through sweetness and enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Optional for added flavor complexity.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the blueberries, water, and sugar. Allow the sugar to dissolve.
Cooking
  1. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes until blueberries soften.
  2. Mash the blueberries with a fork or potato masher to release more juices.
  3. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove solids for a smooth syrup.
  4. Return the strained liquid to the saucepan.
  5. Stir in the lemon juice and vanilla extract (if using).
  6. Allow it to boil for another 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
Final Steps
  1. Remove from heat and let it cool before storing in a jar or serving.

Notes

For additional flavor, consider mixing in cinnamon or nutmeg. Store in a glass jar to maintain freshness. This syrup can also be used creatively in smoothies and desserts.
