Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the box instructions.
Layering
- Spread half of the prepared batter into the greased baking dish and bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
- While the cake is baking, melt caramels with evaporated milk and unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until smooth.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the partially baked cake layer and sprinkle with pecans and chocolate chips.
- Pour the remaining cake batter over the toppings and smooth gently.
Baking
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes until set.
- Allow to cool completely in the pan before frosting or adding toppings.
- Slice and serve.
Notes
To maintain texture, store covered in the refrigerator for up to a week. Can freeze for up to 3 months.
