Cake Base
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix Any chocolate variant works well.
  • 2 large eggs As specified on the cake mix box.
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil Can substitute with melted coconut oil.
  • 1 cup water As specified on the cake mix box.
Caramel Filling
  • 1 bag caramels, unwrapped The star of your turtle cake.
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk Ensures a creamy consistency.
  • 1 stick unsalted butter Adds richness to the caramel sauce.
Toppings
  • 1 cup chopped pecans Brings texture and crunch.
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips Optional but recommended.
  • 1 cup chocolate frosting Optional for added indulgence.
  • to taste caramel or pecan topping For visual appeal and flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the box instructions.
Layering
  1. Spread half of the prepared batter into the greased baking dish and bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
  2. While the cake is baking, melt caramels with evaporated milk and unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until smooth.
  3. Pour the caramel mixture over the partially baked cake layer and sprinkle with pecans and chocolate chips.
  4. Pour the remaining cake batter over the toppings and smooth gently.
Baking
  1. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes until set.
  2. Allow to cool completely in the pan before frosting or adding toppings.
  3. Slice and serve.

Notes

To maintain texture, store covered in the refrigerator for up to a week. Can freeze for up to 3 months.
