Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef Leaner cuts can reduce fat content and calories.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped Adds flavor; shallots or green onions can also work.
  • 2 cups cooked rice Brown rice is a nutrient-dense alternative.
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce Provides moisture and flavor; crushed tomatoes or diced tomatoes are fine substitutes.
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes Fresh tomatoes can also be used when in season.
  • 1 small head cabbage, chopped Green cabbage is standard, but savoy cabbage offers a sweeter flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder Fresh garlic can enhance flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon pepper Freshly ground pepper increases flavor depth.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning A blend of herbs can customize the dish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure an even bake.
  2. In a skillet, brown the ground beef and onion together until the meat is cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the cooked beef mixture with rice, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, chopped cabbage, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning until fully combined.
  4. Carefully pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  6. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the cabbage is tender and the top is golden.
  7. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a fulfilling meal, serve warm with a simple side salad or whole-grain bread. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for 3 months.
