Method
 

Preparation
  1. Slice the tomato into half-inch thick rounds and set aside.
  2. Slice fresh mozzarella into half-inch thick rounds and set aside.
  3. Slice the baguette in half lengthwise and place both halves cut side up on a flat surface.
  4. Optional: Preheat the broiler to High and position an oven rack 8 to 12 inches below the heating element.
  5. In a small mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise and pesto, and spread the mixture on the cut side of the bottom baguette half.
  6. Spoon olive oil over the cut side of the top baguette half, ensuring even distribution.
  7. Place tomato slices on the bottom baguette half, followed by fresh mozzarella slices.
  8. Sprinkle salt and freshly cracked black pepper over the mozzarella layer.
Cooking
  1. Optional: If desired, place the assembled sandwich halves on a baking sheet and broil for 2 to 3 minutes until the bread is lightly toasted and the mozzarella is slightly melted.
  2. Carefully remove from the broiler and drizzle balsamic glaze over the mozzarella layer.
  3. Place basil leaves evenly on top of the mozzarella, then cover with the top half of the baguette (cut side down).
Serving
  1. Slice the sandwich in half to create two 6-inch sandwiches.
  2. Serve with a dipping bowl of high-quality olive oil if desired.

Notes

For optimal flavor, use the freshest ingredients. Consider letting the sandwich sit briefly before serving. Optional toppings include crushed red pepper flakes or garlic powder. Adjust balsamic glaze according to personal taste.
