Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
Assembling
  1. Spread the apple mixture into the prepared baking pan.
  2. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the topping.
  3. Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture is crumbly, then stir in the oats.
  4. Evenly sprinkle the topping mixture over the apples in the baking pan.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the juices are bubbling.
  2. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold, and enjoy with optional toppings like salted caramel or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For best results, combine different apple varieties for a well-rounded flavor. Be sure to let the crisp cool for a few minutes before serving to help it set. Can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated before baking.
