Ingredients

For the Cookie Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Use salted butter for a richer taste or coconut oil for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed Can be replaced with coconut sugar for a less sweet option.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Consider using a sugar substitute if desired.
  • 2 large eggs Can use chia eggs for a vegan alternative.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Use pure vanilla for the best results.
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour Substitute with a gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free cookies.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Baking powder can also be used in a pinch.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt If omitting, reduce other salty components in your mix.
  • 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate chips or chunks (60–70% cocoa) Substitutes like raisins offer a fruity touch.
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans Optional; feel free to skip or use other nuts.

Method

Preparation
  1. Begin by bringing all your ingredients to room temperature for a smoother blend.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
Making the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes.
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, incorporating each fully before adding the next, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined to avoid overmixing.
  5. Fold in the dark chocolate chips or chunks, and nuts if using.
Baking
  1. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about two inches apart.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are set.
Cooling
  1. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For the best flavor, chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking. A sprinkle of flaky sea salt on top elevates the flavor.
