Batter Ingredients
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour Gluten-free flour is an excellent alternative.
  • 1 cup Buttermilk Plain yogurt mixed with water can be used if unavailable.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder Omit if using self-rising flour.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Kosher salt preferred for texture.
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika Cayenne can add a kick if you like heat.
Coating & Frying Ingredients
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs Panko breadcrumbs provide extra crispiness.
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil Canola oil is a neutral choice that holds up well.

Preparation
  1. Slice the onion into rings and separate them.
Batter Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and paprika.
Coating the Onion Rings
  1. Dip each onion ring first in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
Frying
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry the onion rings in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Serving
  1. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Try seasoning the breadcrumbs with your favorite spices. For extra crunch, double-dip the rings before frying.
