Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce Provides saline depth without excessive salt; can substitute with tamari for a gluten-free version.
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar Adds a refreshing tang; apple cider vinegar works in a pinch but alters the flavor slightly.
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar Balances savory flavors; can use honey or maple syrup for a hint of caramel.
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch Thickens the sauce for a luscious consistency; arrowroot powder is a fine alternative.
Main Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil For sautéing; can substitute with grapeseed oil or sesame oil for a nutty twist.
  • 1 pound flank steak The star of the show, providing rich protein; sirloin or skirt steak can also work.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhances flavors; use sea salt for a more natural option.
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper Adds warmth; use white pepper for a different note.
  • 1 medium onion (sliced) Sweetness and texture; red onion can be a sweeter twist.
  • 1 medium red bell pepper (thinly sliced) Color and crunch; yellow or orange bell peppers can substitute.
  • 1 medium green bell pepper (thinly sliced) Offers more crunch and slight bitterness; zucchini can serve as an alternative for a lower-carb option.
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced) Infuses the dish with fragrant depth; substitute with garlic powder if needed.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine all the sauce ingredients and set aside.
  2. Season the flank steak with salt and pepper in a bowl.
Cooking
  1. Add 1 tablespoon of the vegetable oil to a skillet and heat over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the seasoned steak, spreading it evenly in the skillet. Cook for 1 minute without touching it, then use a spatula to stir the meat around. Continue cooking for another minute, then transfer to a plate.
  3. To the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil along with the peppers and onions. Cook for about 4-5 minutes or until softened.
  4. Return the beef to the skillet and add the garlic. Cook for 30 seconds until the garlic is aromatic.
  5. Pour the sauce over everything. Stir and cook for another 30 seconds to 1 minute until thickened. Garnish with sesame seeds if preferred and serve over cooked rice.

Notes

Avoid overcrowding the pan to prevent steaming the meat. Slice the flank steak against the grain for a tender texture. Prepare all ingredients ahead of time for a smoother cooking process.
