Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets Ensure they are fresh for best flavor and texture.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Can be substituted with butter or avocado oil.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic is best, but garlic powder works in a pinch.
  • 1 tablespoon butter Use coconut oil for a dairy-free option.
  • 1 each lemon wedge Brightens up flavors; lime also works.
  • to taste salt and fresh ground black pepper Essential for seasoning; can experiment with spices like cayenne.

Method

Preparation
  1. Separate the broccoli crown from the main stalk and cut into bite-sized florets and tough outer layers of the thick stems.
Cooking
  1. Heat a wide skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil.
  2. Add the broccoli stems in one layer and lightly season with salt and pepper, browning them for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the florets with another pinch of salt and pepper, cooking until they begin to brown in spots, for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Stir in the garlic and sauté for 30 seconds, then pour in ¼ cup of water and cover the skillet.
  5. Cook until the broccoli is vibrant green and tender, about 3 minutes.
  6. Finally, uncover, turn off the heat, and toss in the butter and lemon juice.

Notes

Common mistakes to avoid include overcooking the broccoli which makes it mushy and dull, and skipping the salt which is essential for drawing out its natural flavors. Use fresh, high-quality produce for best taste.
