Preparation
- Melt the butter either by browning it in a saucepan over medium-low heat or by using a microwave-safe bowl at 50% power. Aim for a rich, golden hue without burning, and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes.
- Whisk in both sugars while the butter is still warm to create a glossy mixture.
- Heat-treat the flour by spreading it out on a baking sheet and baking at 350°F for about 5 minutes, or microwave for 1 minute, stirring halfway through.
- Once the butter-sugar mixture has cooled slightly, mix in the vanilla extract and milk until smooth.
- Carefully fold in the heat-treated flour until just combined, and if using unsalted butter, add the optional salt.
- Make sure the dough isn't too warm before adding the chocolate chips.
Serving
- Enjoy immediately or refrigerate the dough for 5-10 minutes to allow it to set.
