Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Essential for that rich chocolate flavor. Dark chocolate chips can be used as an alternative.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Adds richness; can use dairy-free butter for a vegan option.
  • 3/4 cup white granulated sugar Brings sweetness and helps create a crispy crust.
  • 3 large eggs Provide structure and moisture; egg substitutes may work but should be tested for texture.
  • 1/4 tsp salt Enhances all flavors; essential for balance.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Adds depth of flavor.
  • 1 tsp instant espresso powder (optional) Boosts the chocolate taste without being overtly coffee-flavored.
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed) Keeps the cake rich and decadent.
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder Helps the cake rise just a bit.
  • Coarse sea salt (to sprinkle on top) Adds a perfect finishing touch.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Grease an 8-inch round baking pan thoroughly and line the bottom with parchment paper.
Mixing
  1. In a sauce pot over low heat, melt the butter first, then add the chocolate chips, stirring continuously until fully melted and smooth.
  2. Transfer the melted chocolate mixture into the bowl of an electric mixer, add the sugar and vanilla extract, and beat together until well combined.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  4. Lower the mixer speed and add the cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and optional espresso powder. Beat until evenly mixed.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle coarse sea salt on top.
  2. Bake for 30 minutes, checking for doneness at 25 minutes for a gooey center.
  3. Let the cake cool to room temperature before slicing.

Notes

For an extra rich flavor, use high-quality chocolate chips. Serve with whipped cream or fresh berries for added indulgence. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
