  • 3 teaspoons rice vinegar Adds acidity; can substitute with apple cider vinegar.
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce Offers savory depth; necessary for gluten-free diets.
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce Provides sweet, tangy flavor; substitute with soy sauce and sugar if needed.
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth Keeps the sauce light; vegetable broth can be used for a vegetarian version.
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar Sweetness; adjust to taste or replace with honey.
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar Richness; can be swapped for coconut sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger (minced) Adds warmth; fresh is preferred.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Imparts flavor; fresh minced garlic works well too.
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes Adds heat; adjust to spice preference.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch Thickens the sauce; arrowroot powder can be substituted.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a medium pot, add all the ingredients and whisk to combine.
  2. Place it over medium heat for 3-5 minutes until it starts to simmer.
  3. Continue to cook for 5 minutes until the mixture begins to thicken.
  4. Once the sauce is thickened, remove from heat.
  5. Use immediately or let cool and transfer to a jar or airtight container and refrigerate.

Notes

For an added flavor kick, try adding a splash of sesame oil. Fresh herbs like cilantro can add refreshing notes when serving.
