Preparation
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the caramelized onions, sour cream, cream cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Mix until well combined and creamy.
  5. Transfer the mixture to the refrigerator and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

For added depth, sauté some minced garlic with the onions. Substitute Greek yogurt for a lighter dip. Make this dish a day ahead for improved flavor.
