  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda Ensure it’s fresh for best results.
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder A gluten-free version can be used if required.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Sea salt offers a delightful crunch.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Butter (softened) Coconut oil can be used as a dairy-free alternative.
  • 1/4 cup Butter (melted)
  • 1 1/4 cups Buttermilk A milk-vinegar mixture can be used for a dairy-free option.
  • 1 piece Egg A flax egg can be employed for a vegan approach.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking sheet using the butter wrapper for easy greasing.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir until well blended.
  4. Add 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 cup buttermilk, and the egg to the dry mixture, stirring until just incorporated.
  5. Lightly flour your countertop to prevent sticking.
  6. Turn out the dough onto the floured surface and knead it briefly.
  7. Form the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
Baking
  1. In a small bowl, mix together the remaining melted butter and buttermilk for brushing.
  2. Generously coat the top of the loaf with the butter mixture.
  3. Use a sharp knife to cut an X on top to allow steam to escape.
  4. Bake for 45 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  5. Every 15 minutes, brush with the buttermilk mixture for added moisture.
