Ingredients

For the Hot Matcha Milk Tea
  • 1 tsp matcha powder Choose high-quality ceremonial grade for drinking; culinary grade works well for baking and lattes.
  • 3 tbsp hot water Water that is just below boiling (about 175°F) is ideal, as boiling water can scorch the delicate matcha.
  • 1-2 tbsp honey (or sweetener of choice) Honey adds a lovely floral sweetness; try maple syrup or agave for a vegan alternative.
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice) Non-dairy options add a nutty flavor; cow’s milk or oat milk also makes it creamy.
For the Iced Matcha Milk Tea
  • 1 tsp matcha powder Same quality recommendation as the hot version.
  • 3 tbsp hot water Just below boiling to avoid scorching the matcha.
  • 1/4 cup additional milk For the iced version.
  • to taste ice For serving.

Method

Preparation for Hot Matcha Milk Tea
  1. Sift matcha powder into a mug with a small sieve for a smooth blend and pour in the hot water.
  2. Whisk regularly with a traditional matcha whisk, a small whisk, or a handheld frother until the mixture is vibrant green and smooth.
  3. Heat the milk using a milk steamer or a small saucepan over medium heat, whisking constantly to avoid scalding.
  4. Add honey (or sweetener) to your mug and pour in the steamed milk while gently stirring.
  5. Enjoy your warm Matcha Milk Tea as you take a moment to relish in its soothing flavor.
Preparation for Iced Matcha Milk Tea
  1. Follow the first two steps for hot matcha. After achieving a creamy look, stir in honey and 1/4 cup of milk.
  2. Refrigerate the mixture for about 15 minutes to chill.
  3. Pour ice into a tall glass and add in the remaining milk.
  4. Pour the chilled matcha mixture over the top, gently stir to combine, and enjoy this refreshing treat.

Notes

Store matcha in a cool, dark place for freshness. Enjoy hot matcha fresh; leftovers can be refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours. For variations, try different types of milk or add spices like cinnamon or vanilla.
