Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a saucepan, heat milk and butter until warm but not boiling. Add to the dry ingredients along with the egg. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Filling and Baking
- Roll the dough out into a rectangle. Spread 1/4 cup of softened butter on top. Mix brown sugar and vanilla, and sprinkle over the butter.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into equal pieces.
- Place rolls in a greased baking dish and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve warm, optionally topped with nuts.
Notes
These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the microwave or oven. For a fun twist, try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to the brown sugar filling.
