Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Use whole wheat flour for a nutty flavor.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Substitute honey for a healthier option.
  • 1 packet instant yeast Ensure it’s fresh for optimal rising.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Kosher salt works well.
  • 1/2 cup milk Use almond milk for a dairy-free version.
  • 1/4 cup butter Coconut oil makes a great vegan alternative.
  • 1 large egg For vegan, try ground flaxseed mixed with water.
Filling Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Turbinado sugar can be used.
  • 1/4 cup butter Substitute with vegan butter.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Almond extract can add a unique twist.
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts Pecans complement perfectly.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a saucepan, heat milk and butter until warm but not boiling. Add to the dry ingredients along with the egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Filling and Baking
  1. Roll the dough out into a rectangle. Spread 1/4 cup of softened butter on top. Mix brown sugar and vanilla, and sprinkle over the butter.
  2. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into equal pieces.
  3. Place rolls in a greased baking dish and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Serve warm, optionally topped with nuts.

Notes

These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the microwave or oven. For a fun twist, try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to the brown sugar filling.
