Ingredients

Dough ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water Activates the yeast, creating a soft dough.
  • 2 teaspoons sugar Feeds the yeast, enhancing flavor and browning.
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast Key leavening agent, helping the knots rise.
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour Provides structure; adjust based on humidity.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor, balances sweetness.
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted Adds richness and flavor.
Flavor ingredients
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Gives a punch of flavor; can use garlic powder as a substitute.
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Provides a savory, salty finish.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped Adds freshness; can be swapped for dried herbs.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Extra garlicky flavor; optional but recommended.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy to activate the yeast.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, stirring until a dough forms, starting with 2 1/2 cups of flour.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Shaping and Baking
  1. Roll out the dough into strips and tie each strip into a knot.
  2. Place knots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. In a small bowl, mix melted butter, garlic, garlic powder, and parsley. Brush over the knots and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Serve warm for the best experience.

Notes

Avoid using too much flour, as it can make the knots dense. Allow enough time for the dough to rise to achieve light and airy knots. Check oven temperature for accuracy.
