Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups long-grain white rice Gives a fluffy texture; substitutes: jasmine or basmati rice for a twist.
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth Provides rich flavor; substitutes: water or low-sodium chicken broth.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped Adds sweetness and depth; substitutes: shallots or leeks.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Offers aromatic brightness; can be omitted for those averse to garlic.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter Aids in sautéing; use coconut oil for a different flavor.
  • to taste salt and pepper Essential for seasoning; fresh herbs can also complement the taste.
  • as needed Parsley for garnish (optional) Adds color and freshness; can be replaced with chives or cilantro.

Method

Cooking
  1. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Add the rice to the pan and stir to coat it with the oil, cooking for about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Pour in the broth, and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and liquid is absorbed.
  7. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes.
  8. Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with parsley before serving.

Notes

Rinse the rice before cooking to remove excess starch and prevent stickiness. Let the dish rest covered post-cooking to allow the flavors to meld beautifully. For added depth, consider experimenting with bay leaves or homemade broth.
