Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb Ground Beef Lean turkey or chicken can be used for a lighter option.
  • 1 medium Onion Adds sweetness and aromatic depth; shallots make a fantastic substitute.
  • 1 medium Green Bell Pepper Provides crunch; feel free to switch with red or yellow for more sweetness.
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Chicken broth works just as well.
  • 1/2 cup Ketchup Brings sweetness and tang; swap with BBQ sauce for a smoky twist.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce Adds depth; soy sauce can be an excellent alternative.
  • to taste Salt & Black Pepper Essential seasonings; try other spices like paprika for added flair.
  • 4 slices American Cheese Provolone or mozzarella are great alternatives.
  • 4 buns Brioche Buns Whole-grain rolls provide great texture without sacrificing flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground beef and brown until a deep brown crust appears before breaking the beef apart.
  3. Remove the beef (you can leave the fat) and add the butter and the onions and bell peppers. Let brown for 1-2 minutes before stirring, then let brown for another 1-2 minutes before stirring again.
  4. Remove any excess grease. Add the beef back into the pan.
  5. In a small measuring cup, mix the beef broth and cornstarch together.
  6. Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper, whisk then pour the beef broth/cornstarch mixture into the pan.
  7. Cook until the mixture is mostly soaked up, so it’s not as watery, about 3-5 minutes.
  8. Turn off the heat, add in the cheese.
  9. In a pan, heat a little more butter over medium-high heat and toast the buns, then remove to a plate.
  10. Serve meat on toasted brioche buns.

Notes

Serve hot, topped with pickled jalapeños for extra zest or with a dollop of your favorite condiment, like sriracha mayo! Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to three months.
