Preparation
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and green peppers and cook until softened. Remove and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, sautéed onions, green peppers, bread crumbs, milk, garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, paprika, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, and Parmesan cheese. Mix until fully incorporated.
- Form the mixture into hamburger steaks.
Cooking
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the steaks in batches for 5-6 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steaks and transfer to a plate.
- Lower the heat to medium, sprinkle flour over the drippings, and whisk to create a roux.
- Add more garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and gradually whisk in the beef broth. Continue whisking until the gravy thickens.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, coating them in the gravy. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 5 minutes.
- Serve over mashed potatoes or rice and enjoy!
Notes
Let the beef mixture rest before cooking to help with tenderness. When cooking, don’t overcrowd the pan; leave enough space for the steaks to brown properly.
