Ingredients

For the Steaks
  • 2 tablespoons butter Adds richness; substitute with olive oil for a lighter option.
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion, diced Provides sweetness; shallots can be used for a milder flavor.
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced Adds color and crunch; use any bell pepper of your choice.
  • 2 pounds ground beef Base of the dish; consider ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • 3/4 cup Italian bread crumbs Binds your mixture; can substitute with gluten-free crumbs.
  • 1/4 cup milk Moistens your mixture; use almond or coconut milk for dairy-free.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Enhances flavor; fresh minced garlic works well, too.
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper Provides warmth; white pepper can be a subtler choice.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder Adds depth; fresh onions can replace this.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika Offers color; try smoked paprika for a different taste.
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Brings earthiness; try Italian seasoning as an alternative.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds a unique tang; soy sauce is a good substitute.
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese Provides a nutty crust; omit for a dairy-free option.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Thickens your gravy; cornstarch can be a gluten-free option.
  • 3 cups low sodium beef broth The base for your gravy; vegetable broth can lighten it.

Method

Preparation
  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and green peppers and cook until softened. Remove and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, sautéed onions, green peppers, bread crumbs, milk, garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, paprika, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, and Parmesan cheese. Mix until fully incorporated.
  3. Form the mixture into hamburger steaks.
Cooking
  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the steaks in batches for 5-6 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steaks and transfer to a plate.
  2. Lower the heat to medium, sprinkle flour over the drippings, and whisk to create a roux.
  3. Add more garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and gradually whisk in the beef broth. Continue whisking until the gravy thickens.
  4. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, coating them in the gravy. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Serve over mashed potatoes or rice and enjoy!

Notes

Let the beef mixture rest before cooking to help with tenderness. When cooking, don’t overcrowd the pan; leave enough space for the steaks to brown properly.
