Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and butter an 8x8x2 inch glass baking dish.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned, breaking into small pieces for about 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage, stir, and cook for 1 minute.
- Pour in milk or half and half, stirring constantly, and cook until the mixture thickens and starts boiling, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Evenly spread the frozen shredded hash browns in the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle one third of the green onions over the hash brown layer.
- Layer 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese on top of the hash browns.
- Add another third of the green onions for flavor.
- Evenly pour the sausage mixture over the layered ingredients.
- Top with the remaining 1/2 cup of grated cheddar cheese.
- Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake until potatoes are tender and cheese is melted, about 45 minutes.
- Remove from the oven, sprinkle with remaining green onions, and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Use high-quality sausage for best flavor. You can prepare ahead of time and refrigerate overnight.
