Preparation
  1. Boil the pasta: Heat a large pot of salted water until boiling, then add rigatoni and cook for 7 minutes until very al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Sauté the sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add olive oil and the sausage, breaking it up with a spoon and cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Incorporate the vegetables: Add diced onions, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, and salt & pepper, sautéing for another 5 minutes until onions are softened.
  4. Add bell peppers: Toss in chopped bell peppers and sauté for 2 more minutes to soften slightly.
  5. Combine pasta and sauce: Add the drained pasta and pasta sauce to the skillet, tossing everything together to ensure even incorporation.
  6. Prepare baking dish: Grease a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray and transfer the pasta mixture into it.
  7. Top with cheese: Sprinkle grated mozzarella cheese evenly over the pasta mixture.
  8. Bake the dish: Place in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before garnishing with fresh basil. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

For a richer flavor, brown the sausage well. You may also add cream for creaminess or red pepper flakes for a spicy kick. Ensure pasta is al dente before baking, and allow the dish to rest briefly before serving.
