Ingredients

For the Beef
  • 1 pound Ground Beef (80/20) Can substitute with ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Kosher salt works beautifully.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper Freshly cracked is best.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder Fresh minced garlic is a substitution.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garlic Powder Additional amount used in the recipe.
For the Tacos
  • 8 pieces Small Flour Tortillas Corn tortillas are a gluten-free alternative.
  • 1 1/2 cups Cheddar Cheese Swap with Monterey Jack for a different flavor twist.
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil Used for frying to achieve crispiness; olive oil is a great substitute.
Toppings
  • 2 cups Iceberg Lettuce (shredded) Romaine or mixed greens work too.
  • 1 cup Tomatoes (diced) You can use halved cherry tomatoes.
  • 3 pieces Green Onions (sliced) Shallots can be used instead.
For the Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise Greek yogurt is a lighter choice.
  • 2 tablespoons Ketchup Substitute with sriracha for a spicy kick.
  • 2 tablespoons Sweet Pickle Relish Dill pickle relish is a fine substitute.
  • 1 tablespoon Yellow Mustard Dijon would be a sophisticated alternative.
  • 1 teaspoon White Vinegar Apple cider vinegar can add a different nuance.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika Smoked paprika can enhance the flavor profile.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder Fresh onion can be used.

Method

Prepare the Sauce
  1. In a bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white vinegar, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder. Cover and refrigerate.
Prepare the Beef
  1. In a separate bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently and divide into 8 portions.
Cook the Tacos
  1. Press one portion of beef onto one side of each tortilla.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add tacos meat-side down and cook for 4-5 minutes until browned.
  3. Flip the tacos, sprinkle with cheddar cheese, and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the tortilla is crisp, and cheese melts.
  4. Remove from the skillet and repeat with the remaining tacos.
Assemble the Tacos
  1. Fill each taco with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and green onions. Drizzle with the sauce and serve immediately.

Notes

Leftover Smashed Burger Tacos should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consumed within 3 days. Reheat them in the skillet for best results, ensuring the tortillas stay crisp.
