Ingredients

For the marinade
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce Low-sodium options work well.
  • 1/4 cup Olive Oil Avocado oil makes a great substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons Honey or Brown Sugar Maple syrup is a tasty alternative.
  • 3 tablespoons Brown Mustard Yellow mustard can be used in a pinch.
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice Juice from 1/2 lemon; lime juice offers a citrusy variation.
  • 1 piece Serrano Pepper Diced, optional; jalapeƱo works too.
  • 4 cloves Garlic Minced; garlic powder can be a substitute.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano Fresh oregano adds a more vibrant note.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt To taste.
  • 1/4 to 1 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes For extra heat; optional.
For the salmon
  • 2 pieces Salmon Fillets (6 ounces each) Substitute with trout if needed.

Method

Preparation
  1. Whisk together soy sauce, olive oil, honey or brown sugar, mustard, lemon juice, serrano pepper, garlic, oregano, salt, and red pepper flakes in a mixing bowl until well combined.
  2. Place the salmon fillets in a large zip-top bag and pour the marinade over the salmon. Seal the bag, gently press out excess air, and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  3. Alternatively, you can use a shallow dish, pour the marinade over the salmon, and cover tightly with plastic wrap.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your grill or skillet for perfect, evenly cooked salmon.
  2. Cook the marinated salmon for about 4-6 minutes per side, or until cooked to your desired doneness.
Serving
  1. Serve the salmon warm with a side of steamed broccoli or a light salad, drizzling extra marinade over the salmon.

Notes

Avoid over-marinating the salmon; 30-60 minutes is ideal. Consider a quick squeeze of lime before serving for a refreshing twist.
