  • 1/4 cup soy sauce Provides umami and saltiness.
  • 1 orange, juiced Fresh juice brightens the dish.
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger Adds warmth and a zingy touch.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar Balances the flavors with sweetness.
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes For a subtle kick.
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced Enhances the dish's aromatic qualities.
  • orange zest For an extra burst of citrus flavor.
  • green onions, sliced Adds freshness for garnish.
  • sesame seeds Adds texture and visual appeal.

Method

Preparation
  1. Slice the flank steak into 2-inch chunks or longer, thinner strips against the grain.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, orange juice, orange zest, grated ginger, brown sugar, red pepper flakes, and minced garlic. Set aside.
Cooking
  1. Add sesame oil to a medium cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Allow the oil to heat until it shimmers.
  2. Once the oil starts to simmer, add the sliced flank steak in a single layer. Let it brown nicely for 1-2 minutes without turning, then use tongs to turn the beef onto the other side for another 2-3 minutes until browned.
  3. Reduce the heat to low-medium and add the marinade to the pan. Stir to combine and let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 5 minutes until it reduces by half and thickens into a sticky glaze.
Serving
  1. Serve the sticky orange beef over your choice of rice, garnished with fresh orange zest, sliced green onions, and sesame seeds.

Notes

For a more intense orange flavor, add extra zest. Pair with steamed broccoli or snap peas for a nutritious side. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
