Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1 tsp vegetable oil Can substitute with olive oil.
  • 1/4 cup hot water (100-110°F or 38-43°C) Activates the yeast; lukewarm milk can also work.
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast Always check the expiration date.
  • 1 tsp sugar Feeds the yeast; brown sugar adds richness.
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour Use bread flour for a chewier texture.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Adds sweetness to the rolls; reduce for less sweetness.
  • 1/2 tsp salt Enhances flavor; don’t omit.
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (at room temperature) Nut milk can be used as a dairy alternative.
  • 1 large egg Provides richness; substitute with a flax egg for vegan.
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter (at room temperature) Adds moisture and flavor; margarine can be a substitute.
  • 1 large egg yolk For a shiny finish when brushed on top; use a bit of milk for vegan.
  • 1/2 Tbsp water Helps make the egg wash.

Method

To Make the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine hot water and yeast, stirring gently. Let it rest until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Add vegetable oil, sugar, flour, salt, milk, and egg. Mix until a cohesive dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area until doubled, about 1 hour.
To Make the Egg Wash
  1. In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk with water; set aside for brushing.
To Bake the Rolls
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions. Shape into rolls and place them in a greased baking dish.
  3. Brush the tops with the egg wash and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Common mistakes to avoid include not letting the dough rise enough, overbaking, and using too much flour during kneading. Pro tips include measuring flour correctly and allowing the dough to rise in a warm environment.
