Ingredients

Meatball Mixture
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binder for the meatballs; can substitute with a flax egg for vegan options.
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil Adds aromatic freshness; dried basil can substitute.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Essential for flavor; consider using sea salt for a touch of elegance.
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Provides spice; white pepper can work as a milder alternative.
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano A classic herb that deepens flavor; consider thyme for a different profile.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Introduces aroma and warmth; garlic powder may be a good substitute in a pinch.
  • 2 tablespoons water Keeps the mixture moist; chicken broth gives an added flavor boost.
  • 3 tablespoons minced yellow onion Enhances sweetness; shallots provide a lovely alternative.
  • 1 1/3 pounds 93% lean ground turkey The star of the dish; ground chicken can also be used for variation.
  • 2/3 cup dried Italian style bread crumbs Adds depth and texture; gluten-free breadcrumbs work well too.
  • 1/3 cup freshly grated pecorino Romano cheese Offers a delicate cheesiness; Parmesan is a suitable substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Enhances flavor and browning; avocado oil is another great option.
  • 1 large jar (24 oz) good quality marinara sauce Simplifies meal prep; homemade or store-bought options both excel.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, basil, salt, pepper, oregano, garlic, and water.
  2. Add the minced onion, ground turkey, bread crumbs, and pecorino Romano cheese, and mix until well combined.
  3. Form the mixture into balls slightly larger than golf balls.
Cooking
  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides for about 7 to 8 minutes.
  2. Pour marinara sauce over the meatballs and bring to a gentle boil.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until meatballs are cooked through, about 15 minutes.
  4. Serve with additional basil and cheese on top.

Notes

To avoid common mistakes, don’t overmix the meat, cook at a medium temperature, and allow the meatballs to rest after cooking. For extra flavor, consider chilling the meatball mixture for 30 minutes before cooking.
