  • 2 cups tomato sauce Make your own for an extra punch of flavor.
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained Fresh tomatoes are a viable option.
  • 1 cup beef broth Vegetable broth keeps it vegetarian-friendly.
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning Combine dried herbs like basil and oregano as an alternative.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Essential for enhancing flavors.
  • 2 tbsp olive oil Other oils like avocado oil can also work.
  • 1 cup mozzarella or Parmesan cheese, shredded Feel free to mix cheeses.
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional) Crushed crackers can stand in for a crunch.

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion, cooking for 3-4 minutes until translucent.
  3. Stir in garlic, carrots, and bell peppers, cooking for an additional 5-7 minutes.
  4. Push the vegetables aside in the skillet and add ground beef.
  5. Cook until browned (about 5-7 minutes), breaking it apart; drain off excess fat if needed.
  6. Incorporate tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and beef broth into the skillet.
  7. Sprinkle in Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  8. Allow to simmer for about 10 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Pour the beef mixture into a casserole dish, adding a layer of cheese and breadcrumbs if desired.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  12. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Mix in seasonal veggies to change the flavor. Allow leftovers to sit overnight for flavors that intensify beautifully.
