Ingredients
  

Meat and Sauce
  • 1 lb ground beef Substituting with ground turkey offers a lighter option.
  • 1 cup onion, diced Shallots may work for a milder taste.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Garlic powder is a quick substitute.
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes Fresh tomatoes can be diced as a substitute.
  • 6 oz can tomato paste Pureed roasted red peppers can add a unique twist.
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano Consider fresh if available!
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil Italian seasoning is a great alternative.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Consider using smoked salt for extra flavor.
Lasagna Layers
  • 12 pieces lasagna noodles Gluten-free noodles are available for a substitute.
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese Cottage cheese can work in a pinch.
  • 1 each egg Vegan egg replacements can be utilized.
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Fontina cheese can create a delightful flavor.
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese Pecorino Romano makes a fabulous swap.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Brown the ground beef with the diced onion and garlic until fragrant. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper; simmer for 30 minutes.
Layering
  1. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt.
  2. Spread a layer of sauce on the bottom of a baking dish.
  3. Start layering noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan.
  4. Repeat layers until you use all ingredients, ending with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
Baking
  1. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  3. Let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Serve hot with a sprinkle of fresh basil and a side of garlic bread. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can freeze lasagna wrapped tightly in foil for up to three months.
