Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 box yellow cake mix Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker recommended.
  • 1 8 oz cream cheese, softened Can substitute with 8 oz of sour cream for a lighter texture.
  • 4 pieces eggs Contributes to moisture and richness.
  • 2/3 cup oil Vegetable or canola oil recommended.
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar Essential for toffee-like flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon Enhances sweetness and flavor profile.
  • 2 cups powdered sugar For icing.
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk Adjust for desired icing consistency.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances overall flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a large bowl, blend softened cream cheese for about 30 seconds until creamy using a hand mixer.
  3. Incorporate eggs into the cream cheese mixture and blend until smooth and lump-free.
  4. Stir in dry cake mix and oil until just combined, avoid over-mixing.
Baking
  1. Grease a 9x13 baking dish and pour in half of the cake batter.
  2. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mix over this layer and top with the remaining batter.
  3. Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes, covering with foil around the 20-minute mark if it browns too quickly.
Icing
  1. Once baked, cool the cake for 10 minutes before poking holes all over the surface with a fork or toothpick.
  2. Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to form a smooth icing.
  3. Pour half of the icing over the warm cake, letting it soak into the holes, then cool completely and add the remaining icing.
Serving
  1. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Over-mixing the batter can lead to a dense cake. Cool the cake before icing to prevent runniness.
