Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 3 cups All-purpose flour Forms the structure of the bread.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor and strengthens gluten.
  • 1 teaspoon Yeast Leavens the bread for a light texture.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups Water Activates the yeast and hydrates the dough.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and yeast.
  2. Add water and mix until a shaggy, sticky dough forms.
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and let it rise at room temperature for 12 to 18 hours.
Cooking
  1. After the dough has risen, it should be bubbly and doubled in size. Lightly flour a work surface and turn the dough out onto it.
  2. Shape the dough into a ball and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
  3. While the dough rests, preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and place a Dutch oven inside to heat up for 30 minutes.
  4. Once heated, carefully remove the Dutch oven and place the dough inside. Cover with the lid and bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and crusty.
Serving
  1. Take the bread out of the Dutch oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Slice and serve as desired. Enjoy warm or at room temperature with your favorite accompaniments.

Notes

Use fresh active dry yeast for the best rise. Allow the bread to cool completely before slicing for a cleaner cut. Experiment with different flours or add herbs/cheese for varied flavors. Store the bread wrapped in a kitchen towel to maintain moisture.
